What counts the most for true coffee gourmets is a distinctive, deep taste and aroma. We can distinguish Arabica and Robusta among the most popular types of coffee. However, each coffee is different in terms of taste, fragrance or caffeine content. What are the most important differences between Arabica and Robusta?

Arabica

Arabica coffee, or the famous “coffea arabica” (Latin) is by far the most popular and noblest coffee, accounting for 70% of all world crops. This variety comes from Africa, where it is grown on fertile soils around the mountains. Its quality and aroma depend on the region it comes from, altitude or cultivation method. There are many varieties of Arabica available on the market, hence enthusiasts and true coffee connoisseurs have a lot to choose from.

Arabica coffee has won the hearts of consumers and is now the most chosen coffee in the world. It is distinguished by a mild taste, which sometimes leaves a sweet aftertaste. It contains about 1.2% caffeine, so it gently stimulates action. Arabica contains more oils (16%) than Robusta (10%). On average, Robusta has more acidity than Arabica.

The beans of this coffee are slightly oblong with the S-shaped furrow going through the middle. The main difference between the said Arabica and Robusta is also its price. Due to the laborious and complicated method of cultivation and the smaller amount of crops obtained from harvest, Arabica is definitely more expensive than Robusta.

Robusta coffee

This type of coffee is less known, but right now, it is gaining popularity. Robusta comes from Africa, is grown on less demanding soil in lowland plantations. It is considered  to be a less noble variety, with a more pungent and bitter taste than Arabica. Robusta is also sometimes called Congolese coffee.

Thanks to the higher content of caffeine in the grain (about 2.5%), Robusta has become a plant resistant to weather conditions and harmful effects of parasites. This species is easier to grow. Robusta trees sometimes reach up to 10 m in height and give a very high yield compared to Arabica coffee, which affects the lower price of Congolese coffee.

The difference between these two types of coffee can also be seen in the structure of their beans. Robusta beans are smaller and rounder and have a straight furrow.
